Following the roaring success of Netflix’s raunchy comedy series Sex Education, its star Asa Butterfield has spoken about what fans can anticipate from the season 4, which is currently in full production and shooting. Several characters have left the show, propelling Butterfield’s co-stars like Emma Mackey & Ncuti Gatwa to stardom, and the current series will see a change not only in school location, but also in shooting location.
One thing that will not change is the leading man, who, in an interview with Radio Times, discussed what had changed – and what hadn’t – ahead of the season 4. “I’m not sure how much I can tease,” he admitted. “But we’re in a new school, in new locations, and things have changed. And we have some new characters. The show has definitely evolved in some ways. But the core team is still involved, and it’s been fun – I mean, we all know each other so well at this point, so it’s a good time and a laugh.”
Sex Education follows Otis, a super smart but socially awkward adolescent whose mother is a well-known sex therapist. He joins forces with fellow student Maeve (Mackey) to operate an underground sex therapy clinic to supplement his income. Since 2019, the show has been a wild hit for Netflix, with over 40 million Netflix subscribers tuning in.

Mackey, who has had two major roles in films this year – Death on the Nile, directed by Kenneth Branagh, and Emily, a biopic of Emily Bront from Frances O’Connor – would be taking a step back slightly from the role, with her character flying off to America for the further education under the close watch of her new tutor, played by Schitt’s Creek alum & newcomer to this show, Dan Levy.
“It’s very familiar! And because we have more characters, it’s a little more sporadic “Mackey stated. “So there’s… I’m not as involved as I used to be, and yes, I’m curious to see what happens – because I also don’t know. I’m also learning as we go, so it’ll be interesting!”
Meanwhile, Gatwa will have to weigh his duties on the tv series with his new responsibilities as the latest incarnation of Doctor Who, which began filming this week, and will also appear in Greta Gerwig’s new Barbie film.
