Shazam! Asher Angel’s Billy Batson & his foster family will face off against the Daughters of Atlas in Fury of the Gods, which picks up a few years after its predecessor. The Daughters of Atlas are attempting to obtain a weapon that could end the world. Along with other DCU veterans Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Ian Chen, Faithe Herman, Meagan Good, Djimon Hounsou, Grace Fulton, Jovan Armand, D.J. Cotrona, Marta Milans, Cooper Andrews, and Rizwan Manji, Levi and Angel are returning to lead the cast. Shazam! Zegler, Liu, and Mirren will also make their franchise debuts in Fury of the Gods as the Daughters of Atlas; the former has been hinted at as a potential romantic interest for Grazer’s Freddy Freeman.

Contrary to Shazam!, which it succeeded, Fury of the Gods debuts as the DC Universe (DCU) is undergoing a significant shakeup, with The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran now leading DC Studios and canceling plans for Henry Cavill’s Superman comeback, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam future. Although Gunn and Safran may ultimately decide to alter their 10-year plan, Levi has remained optimistic about his Shazam future in the DC Universe. He says he is in a “pretty good position,” despite the possibility that Gunn and Safran may change their minds. Johnson’s departure has closed the door on that direction, as early plans for the previously known as the DC Extended Universe franchise included a confrontation between Shazam and Black Adam.

The first Shazam! movie hinted at a conflict among him and Mister Mind, the speaking alien caterpillar voiced by Sandberg who formed an alliance with Mark Strong’s Dr. Sivana. The two Shazam-based characters may no longer clash in the future. Due to concerns about overstuffing the plot, Sandberg confirmed that Mister Mind will not appear in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, given that he and Sivana later joined the Monster Society of Evil in the comics, it would be exciting to see the two characters return for a potential third film. Shazam’s return to the big screen on March 17 may pave the way for a bright future in the DC Universe given Gunn’s penchant for adapting less well-known characters.
