Hayley Atwell has a doubtful update regarding Peggy Carter’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the death of her variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite having a bigger role in the MCU’s small-screen universe after making her debut in Captain America: The First Avenger, Atwell’s character quickly rose to the status of fan-favorite supporting character due to both her desire for a better, more equal world and the chemistry she shared with Captain America star Chris Evans. Atwell would return to the role for half of the Avengers films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the first Ant-Man film, Agent Carter, and more recently in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Hayley Atwell reflected on her time portraying Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a recent interview with Digital Spy. After expressing some dissatisfaction with her character’s development in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Atwell would provide a shaky update about her potential MCU future, believing that it ultimately lies in Marvel’s hands but that the character is “no longer mine.” Look at what Atwell said below:

It’s so funny, because, you know, I did that 10 years ago, and I love her because I love the people, and you never know [if there could be more]. It depends on what Marvel, and what the audiences, want … I’m a custodian of her. Compared to the rest of my career and everything I’ve done or my stage work and doing Mission: Impossible now and all the diversity of roles I’ve played, and the diversity that I get to explore, and to be able to play more complex roles and villains and lots of different things — she is not mine anymore. She lives in the world of people that have taken her into their heart. And that’s beautiful. But it’s kind of like: yeah, you can’t control the impact a particular role has on the rest of the world.

Peggy Carter’s potential future in the MCU may raise doubts in Atwell’s mind, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the door is shut on her rejoining the team. It would have been understandable to assume that The Infinity Saga’s epic conclusion would serve as Peggy’s final chapter, providing her and Steve with the best possible ending, given the way that Avengers: Endgame ended with Evans’ Steve Rogers remaining in the past and marrying Peggy. But as the MCU delved into its Multiverse Saga, Atwell came back to the franchise for both What If…? and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which gave her the chance to take on the super-powered version of her iconic hero.

It’s not surprising that some people might think Peggy’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in jeopardy after the Benedict Cumberbatch-led sequel’s climactic scene, in which Captain Carter meets her demise at the hands of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. The mid-credits scene from season one, in which Captain Carter and Natasha Romanoff found the HYDRA Stomper armor and a person inside, excitedly thought it was Steve, will be the starting point for the What If…? season 2 premiere, it has already been confirmed. The new season’s footage screened at San Diego Comic-Con this year confirmed it would be Steve, even though he had been brainwashed by his captors and changed into the show’s interpretation of the Winter Soldier, creating a heartbreaking conflict between the two.

With What If…? season 2, Atwell’s Marvel Cinematic Universe future is set in the world of animation, but it will be interesting to see if she ever returns to the live-action genre. Since Atwell has previously expressed interest in a live-action Captain Carter movie and there is a ton of unexplored material in the MCU timeline between Agent Carter season 2 and being seen in the ’70s in Avengers: Endgame and ’89 Ant-Man flashback, there are many opportunities for her return.
