Peyton List from Cobra Kai supports a popular theory that include her character, Tory, & Samantha. The hit Netflix series may have wrapped up its most recent installment in September, but Cobra Kai season 5 has sparked a lot of debate for the way it ended on a hopeful note by effectively ending all of its major rivalries. Daniel and Johnny had become friends by the time the finale rolled around. Miguel and Robby were making fun of each other as future step-siblings. Even Tory and Sam were able to put their differences aside for the sake of the greater good.
List responses some questions for BuzzFeed while promoting her new film The Friendship Game. When asked if Tory and Sam could ever be friends, List says she initially agreed with her co-star, Mary Mouser, who plays Sam, that the two would never be friends. Still, as she explains, she expresses a more nuanced perspective of their relationship and, in the end, responds positively to a long-standing Cobra Kai theory:
“At first, I remember being with Mary and someone asked that question. I cut her off and was like, “No, sometimes there’s people who will just never be able to be friends. There’s just too much that’s happened.” But I was younger when I started the show and when I said that. Now that time has passed, I’ve realized how things can heal and change and how petty boy problems can be. I mean, it was more than that too. Obviously, she accused [Tory] of stealing and all kinds of horrible things.”
“But I think that it can be put aside because they’ve been through a lot together. Someone recently commented something that I really thought was interesting. It was a fan, and he said, “It seems like these girls are just fighting over these boys to get each other’s attention. It’s almost more about each other than it is about the boys.” And I was like, “Well, at the end of the day, maybe they just really like to fuck with each other. Maybe they just really like each other.” Not in a romantic way, but like they would be such a badass friendship pair.”
Can Tory And Samantha Be Friends?
Interestingly, despite the fact that other former rivals appear to be at ease with one another, Cobra Kai refuses to let Sam and Tory get there. They’re still tense, and they never actually talk about their past. In contrast to Miguel & Robby, it is more that they appear to be fine enough to work on the same side. The flip side is that old animosities may resurface once they no longer have a reason to be partners, and as List points out in her remarks, they have plenty of reasons to carry all that bad blood.
Cobra Kai season 6 has received positive updates from the cast, despite the fact that it has yet to be renewed. At this point, it appears that the dojo drama will return, even though no official announcement has been made. If that occurs, there is little indication of how the story will go beyond Kreese’s escape from prison. It’s possible that the writers will resurrect at least some of the old feuds. Alternatively, new Cobra Kai characters could be introduced to provide a new source of conflict.
Another factor to think about is whether, as previously hinted, Cobra Kai will be ending soon. From the standpoint of narrative satisfaction, it would be cool to witness the main characters actually getting together and evolving their bonds as the Karate Kid sequel draws to a close. In any case, the popular interpretation of Sam and Tory’s relationship contains depths worth exploring.
