Tobey Maguire, who plays Spider-Man, has finally spoken out about the popular Bully Maguire memes after 15 years of the jokes being widely circulated. After receiving high praise for his performance in Sam Raimi’s first two web-slinging movies, Tobey Maguire and his director encountered less favorable reviews for their work in Spider-Man 3. Sony pressured Raimi to include Venom in the threequel, which led to an overstuffed plot in which Peter Parker crossed over to the dark side. In a unique act of retaliation, Raimi gave Parker’s dark, egotistical arc a comedic spin, inspiring a string of Bully Maguire memes that highlighted how the dancing, jazz-loving lead character was being negatively affected by the Venom symbiote.

Tobey Maguire hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit in honor of the release of the new film Babylon and answered a range of fans’ pressing queries. When asked about the popular Bully Maguire memes from Spider-Man 3, for example, Maguire broke his silence to admit that he had seen them and to share some of his opinions on the jokes. Below are Maguire’s responses:

Will Tobey Maguire Return as Spider-Man?

Even though the movies themselves haven’t fared well, Bully Maguire memes are still regarded as the most memorable aspect of Spider-Man 3 15 years after the threequel first debuted in theaters. This is because Tom Hardy’s acclaimed performance as Eddie Brock has replaced Topher Grace’s critically panned Venom performance. The actor returned to the superhero genre with the multiverse-focused Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside his first replacement, Andrew Garfield, even though it was initially believed that Tobey Maguire was done with the role entirely after the creative differences between Raimi & Sony during the development of Spider-Man 4. Following numerous set photos and videos that showed both Maguire and Garfield standing next to current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland in their respective suits, the pair’s return became a notorious talking point.

Since the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, audiences have been wondering whether Tobey Maguire will come back for a potential Spider-Man 4. Maguire has been mum about the possibility of him directing another web-slinging film, similar to his appearance in the third installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though Raimi has repeatedly expressed interest in the idea after returning to the genre with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Kirsten Dunst, who performed Mary-Jane Watson in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, has also shown a strong desire to return in a follow-up, pointing out that the MCU’s multiverse structure gives her the option to do so.

There won’t be a shortage of web-slinging entertainment hitting theaters in the near future, even if Tobey Maguire decides not to return for a potential Spider-Man 4 release. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which has been eagerly anticipated for years, will finally be released next year. Sony Chairman Tom Rothman revealed recently that an MCU-set Spider-Man 4 is in development, but he didn’t provide a timeline for when it might happen or an indication of whether Tom Holland would be back. With Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, El Muerto, and Venom 3, the studio also keeps growing its Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, one of which is said to introduce the franchise’s Spider-Man. The Spider-Man trilogy by Tobey Maguire is currently available on Netflix for viewers to watch as they wait for information on the character’s future.
