Henry Cavill has already completed filming for a Superman cameo in the upcoming DC movie The Flash. Cavill first showed up as Superman in the DC Universe in 2013’s Man of Steel, and he would return for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 & Justice League in 2017. Cavill’s future as Superman was uncertain for several years before he had a cameo appearance in the Black Adam post-credits scene this year. However, newly-appointed DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran recently announced plans to make some significant changes to the DC Universe, which could include some serious re-tooling of the DC protagonists cast in the early days of the DCEU.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill already has filmed a cameo appearance as Superman in The Flash. Cavill shot his part in September, and Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa, is also likely to make a cameo. However, with Gunn and Safran planning major changes to DC in the following weeks, there is reportedly internal studio debate about whether Cavill’s cameo should remain in the film. If Gunn and Safran remove Cavill’s Superman from the DCU entirely, they may forego the Superman cameo so that DC does not make future promises it cannot keep.

How Does Cavill’s Superman Fit Into The Flash?

There is no word yet on whether Cavill’s cameo will end up making it into the final cut of The Flash. Though the future of the Justice League is uncertain at the present, DC still intends to release The Flash, a film that has been on DC’s mind since 2014. Though Miller’s legal troubles have cast some doubt on the film’s and the character’s future, and the film’s premiere date has been pushed back several times, the June 16 premiere remains set. The appearances of Cavill and Momoa, as well as Ben Affleck’s Batman, firmly anchor the film to the current iteration of the DC Universe and its Justice League characters.

DC fans reacted positively to Cavill’s surprise appearance at the end of Black Adam, as they were overjoyed to see Cavill resuming his role as Superman. Though the cameo may set up Superman facing off against Black Adam in upcoming DC films, Superman’s appearance in The Flash may be more lighthearted. Clark Kent and Barry Allen had a fun relationship in Justice League, with the film ending on a humorous note with the two racing across America.

Does Henry Cavill Still Have A Future In DC?

With Cavill’s Black Adam cameo released prior to Gunn & Safran taking over, the appearance isn’t a sure sign that Cavill will remain a part of the DCU, especially with all of the rumored changes coming to the franchise. Though fans are excited to see Cavill return, the future of DC is fluid and uncertain, especially with conflicting reports about how profitable Black Adam will be. Despite the fact that The Flash will premiere in June, Gunn & Safran are scheduled to meet with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week to put out their new DC Universe plan, so fans may not have to wait long to find out what the new DC Universe will look like.
